Default Item time outs

I remember someone bringing up item drops to Gaile about how it is unfair that some people are jerks in the game and if a good item drops for you and you die they wont rez you and wait for the item to become public and take it. Gaile agreed that this was unfair and someone said something should be done about it. Well my husband and I were talking about this the other night and while it is unfair that people do that if you took away making items public it would punish the good people. For example a while back in tombs everyone died and my husband didnt have rez and one of our guildies had the monk staff drop and hadnt had a chance to get it as well as other items for other people. He was going to pick up all he could going best first and then give them to the people they dropped for...unfortunatly he died before he could. But as we talked about this he came up with a good idea. There should be a button somewhere in the game that says "make public" when you click it you would get a warning on your screen like the ones you get when upgrading items that says "you are about to make all your dropped items public are you sure you want to do this" that way your stuff stays yours or a freind can pick it up for you. I think this would eleminate the jerks who are out to steal items but still help those who trust who they are with.

I agree that SOMETHING has to be done..I have seen shards drop and people not say anything and run off to kill a mob only to turn around and have a member of the group running back to collect them...I usually say HEY DUDE pick that up...but some players dont pay attention...

But I do like in Tombs runs when no one picks up the crappy drops and I clean the house and salvage everything.

Most of the suggestions regarding item drops not "timing out" had a mechanic that allowed for drops to become public with consent/action of the player. I think the simplest method was, items do not time out until the player for which the item is assigned leaves the group. In the situation you described with no rez available, the dead can simply leave the party and let the other trusted team mates pick up their drops.

But if you make it so they go public when you leave the game and you find one of the said jerks then you face this problem; say your in uw and an ecto drops for you and you die...mr jerk wants your ecto so he refuses to rez you and he knows that once you leave the game it goes public..he can simply wait you out. get up move around do whatever it is he has to do and leave the game running until you get bored enough to leave then its his. However with the make items public button the items would not go public if you leave the game...only if you hit the button. And since they are working on a rejoin function there would not be a problem with your poor buddy who got error 7 loosing that ecto or gold item...he can simply get it when he rejoins.

Or, you could make as you form a party a trusted list. People in the party who are on this trust list can pick up your drops at half the timeout, or integrate it with the make public button by adding "Make drops public to trusted party members" when you die

Simplest solution would be for all drops to automatically go into the persons inventory if they have room whether dead or alive, then if they don't want it, they can drop it for anyone to take.
